Mirette on the High Wire

Circus Sarasota’s Big Top Education provides a thoughtful look at tight wire walking.

This three part exploration by The Circus Arts Conservatory’s Education program gives a thoughtful look at tight wire walking through the Caldecott Award-Winning Children’s book “Mirette on the High Wire” by Emily Arnold McCully. To enhance the story the students will have the opportunity to walk a tight wire, learn new vocabulary, research circus terms and get a glimpse of Paris 100 years ago. Throughout the lessons, students are challenged to reflect on heroism, fear, friendship and responsibility.

  • Ideal for grades 2-4
  • Attempting to walking on a real tight wire is an original experience and the simulation creates a better understanding of the story
  • “Mirette on the High Wire” is a team-building exercise helping students focus on their writing capacities by exchanging experiences, defining them, and building on them as a group.
