Don’t Miss Your Opportunity to See Sailor Circus this Spring!

Sailor Circus Academy students will shine under the spotlight as they present the 69th annual spring performance of “The Greatest ‘Little’ Show on Earth” – for one day only under the Big Top in Nathan Benderson Park behind the Mall at UTC. This is the first time Sailor Circus students have performed under the Big Top in Sarasota. In past years, the show has taken place in the iconic Sailor Circus Arena which is currently closed for upcoming renovations.

“People should come to see the Sailor circus one-day-only spectacular on March 17th to invigorate their spirit. Come and celebrate the joy of seeing students ages 8 to 18 delivering a once-in-a-lifetime performance under the Big Top,” said Courtney Wyatt, Circus Arts Training Program Co-Manager. “If you come early you’ll be able to catch an outdoor flying trapeze thrill show too! It truly will be a great family friendly way to spend Saint Patrick’s Day.”

The 2018 spring show tells the story of Sailor Circus and what it means to the Academy students to be a part of something so enduring. “Sailor circus is nearly 70 years old and we couldn’t be more proud of all of the dedication and enthusiasm that our students and families put into this production,” Wyatt went on to say. “Don’t miss being part of this year’s Journey!”

The show will feature many traditional circus acts such as Juggling, and Spanish Web in addition to newer, more contemporary acts such as the Slack Line and Aerial Silks. Other featured acts include the Trampoline which hasn’t been included in a Sailor Circus show for the past few years and audience favorites, Acrobatic Adagio and Roller-skating. The youth circus artists ages 8-18 have been practicing their routines for months gearing up for their opportunity to perform in front of a crowd.

“Circus has a profound effect on people of all ages – boys, girls, men and women,” says Grace Johnson, 17, Ringmistress and Aerialist. “People leave the show being inspired by us – maybe not wanting to perform in a circus but to do something new. They have a renewed sense of awe and amazement for human life and what the body can do.”

Celebrating its 69th season, Sailor Circus is the longest-running youth circus in the country. The program, the Sailor Circus Academy, trains students in over 30 disciplines of circus arts. Through the circus arts, students build a sense of empowerment, tenacity and confidence that helps them find a positive path and overcome barriers in their lives. In addition to gaining life management skills, all coming from different schools and backgrounds, these young people are gaining long lasting friendships through building trust in each other.

The Greatest ‘Little’ Show on Earth is being presented Saturday, March 17 for two shows only at 2 and 7 PM at the Big Top in Nathan Benderson Park behind the Mall at UTC. Tickets are $10 – $25.
