SARASOTA — A year ago, five performers in Nik Wallenda’s high-wire act were seriously injured in an accident during Circus Sarasota rehearsals. None of the injuries were life-threatening, but Wallenda still called it the worst day of his life. Wallenda was not injured, but members of his family were. Circus Sarasota for 2018 opens Friday, almost a year to the day after the incident.Circus officials are taking a “show-must-go-on” attitude. More

Some high-energy entertainment, a video tribute to a lost advocate and plenty of recognition for local arts champions made for a lively Monday night at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County’s 19th “Celebration of the Arts” gathering at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
The annual event honors individuals and organizations selected by special panels for their contributions to the area’s arts and cultural scene. More

On a recent Saturday, Suncoast Technical College swapped its typical educational courses for halls filled with students on hover boards, teachers playing with puppets, and multitudes of artistic work provided by dozens of Sarasota organizations.
The change of scenery was due to EdExplore SRQ’s second annual ED-Stravaganza, featuring 40 Sarasota area arts, culture and science organizations offering field trips and in-class opportunities for teachers to provide for their students during the school year. Clowns, scientists, actors and even some ice cream connoisseurs were pitching unique approaches to learning. More

There’s more to the 2017 World Rowing Championships than rowing.
Organizers have packed the nine-day event at Nathan Benderson Park with more than 100 performances and 200 vendors.
The opening ceremony set for 7 p.m. Sept. 23, and a pre-festival scheduled for 5 p.m. will include live music, fireworks and activities. The celebration is designed to introduce fans and athletes from around the world to the area’s circus history and culture. Both are free and open to the public. More

The Circus Arts Conservatory has welcomed three new board members. Don Malawsky returns to the board after serving from 2008-2013. Malawsky worked within the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the New York Stock Exchange and Merrill Lynch before retiring in 2007 and moving to Florida with his wife. Michael Salmon is the director of Middle/Upper School Admissions at The Out-Of-Door Academy. An avid circus supporter and previous performer, Salmon recently joined The CAC in Washington, DC and served as the assistant house manager for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Barbara Tye has supported non-profit organizations for over 25 years, and founded her own business in 1984, where she provides custom architectural moulding, millwork and custom cabinetry for retail furniture stores nationally.
